Travertine vs. Concrete Pavers for Your Tampa Pool Deck

Redoing a pool deck is one of the most satisfying upgrades a Tampa home can get, and the material decision usually comes down to two finalists: travertine or concrete pavers. Both are good. Here is how to choose.

The Barefoot Test (Heat)

Winner: Travertine. This is the big one in Florida. Travertine is a natural stone that reflects heat and stays walkable in direct July sun. Concrete pavers, especially darker colors, get genuinely hot. If your deck faces south or west with no shade, this single factor may decide it.

Slip Resistance

Winner: Travertine, slightly. Tumbled travertine has natural texture that grips wet feet. Quality concrete pavers with a textured finish are also good; avoid smooth or glossy-sealed surfaces around any pool.

Salt Systems and Chemicals

Tie, with an asterisk. Both handle saltwater pools well when sealed properly. Unsealed travertine can pit over years of salt exposure; unsealed concrete pavers fade. Either way, plan on sealing your deck every two to three years.

Color and Style

Travertine brings natural stone variation: ivory, walnut, silver, gold. No two pieces identical. Concrete pavers offer far more shape, pattern, and color control, and can match or contrast your patio and driveway exactly. Style is personal; bring samples home and look at them wet and dry, at noon and at sunset.

Cost

Winner: Concrete pavers. Expect concrete pavers at $12 to $18 per square foot installed and travertine at $18 to $30. On a typical 800 square foot Tampa pool deck, that is roughly a $5,000 to $9,000 difference. Durability and Repair

Both beat a poured concrete deck, which cracks as Tampa’s sandy soil shifts and can only be patched ugly or replaced whole. Pavers of either kind flex with the ground, and a damaged unit can be lifted and replaced invisibly. This repairability is the quiet superpower of any paver system.
